The towns of Newport Beach and Corona del Mar were built around natural waterways, now greatly altered. In Newport Beach, a peninsula shelters a harbor and an inland estuary. Most of the area’s big beaches are on the peninsula. Balboa Island lies in Newport Harbor between the peninsula and the mainland. The tides flow into the estuary, an ancient riverbed carved into a mesa. This is a landscape worth exploring.
